O SPACE Architecture & Interior Design :: Kitchen with island

Kitchen with island

Kitchens carry with them many stories. The history of the generations who have taught the art of cooking to the young, those who have learned from their elders to get their hands dirty, those who cook with love for their guests. It's no coincidence that the kitchen symbolizes the heart of a home; it's the organ that pumps all the family's experiences out to the rest of the house. In this project, it was important to create more storage space and provide more light to the kitchen and living room, with an open space solution. We gathered all the ingredients for this refurbishment and the main course is optimization with a dash of novelty.

Interior refurbishment project and works

Creating greater proximity between the living room and kitchen spaces for more intimate moments was the main objective of this project, which is why the open space solution proved to be the most appropriate. The island allows for a more practical and functional space, optimizing the storage system in what is also an area for quicker and more informal meals.

In this way, two rooms were transformed into just one, separated by a slatted wooden panel that gives both spaces more spaciousness and light. The remodeling of the kitchen made it possible to create multiple functions in this space, from the possibility of watching television while preparing meals to communicating with the whole family, due to its orientation towards the living room.

Appliances were built into the cabinets, which are lacquered in beige and anti-fingerprint, with plenty of storage possibilities. The kitchen worktop, counter and sink in continuous white HI-MACS acrylic stone also give a greater sense of spaciousness, as the surfaces connect seamlessly in an unnoticeable way.

The surface of the island was also coated with the same acrylic stone, as this material is non-porous, thermo-moldable, fire-resistant, low in volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and highly tolerant when in contact with food. In this way, we neutralized the risk of ignition with the induction hob built into the island panel.

Finally, slatted wood was used to cover details of the cupboards, as well as the open space divider, contrasting with the white lacquer of most of the furniture. By opting for a similar shade to the floating vinyl flooring, the feeling of continuity is even better achieved.
