O SPACE Architecture & Interior Design :: Flat Remodelling

Flat Remodelling

This renovation project focused on maximising the space and improving the functionality of a flat divided into a social area and a private area. The social area, comprising a small living room and an equally small kitchen, was completely transformed by demolishing the wall that separated these two spaces, creating an open-plan environment. The open space is extremely versatile because the absence of fixed walls allows the layout to be configured and reconfigured to serve various needs, such as work, rest and entertainment. The kitchen, in console format, and the upper units, with two levels of niches to increase storage space, were clad with a beige agglomerated stone worktop with neutral dots that harmonise with the colours of the other materials.

To make the kitchen even more useful, we added a pantry next to the fridge and a wine cellar in a previously unused niche between the laundry room and the living room. Optimising space was a priority, resulting in an elegant and functional kitchen.

In the private area, the cherry flooring was kept, challenging us to find a colour palette for the social area that would complement the existing one without major changes. The result was a continuous floor in selected areas, maintaining visual cohesion throughout the flat.

The service bathroom, although small, was essential to include a shower tray to support the bedrooms; we replaced the normal opening door with a sliding door. The walls are clad in ceramic tiles that imitate terrazzo and a colour palette in shades of grey and blue-grey. The washbasin was integrated into a customised cabinet that also offers additional storage.

In the corridor that distributes the bedrooms, the ceiling previously lined with dark wood has been painted white, transforming a previously gloomy space into a lighter, cosier environment. In the bedrooms, the wardrobes were replaced with linen-lined interiors and sliding doors, optimising the space and bringing more fluidity to the rooms.

In the private bathroom, we faced the challenge of a beam that compromised both the space and the aesthetics of the room. The solution found was to line the wall of the beam, covering it up with a custom cabinet above the toilet, which is now suspended, complemented by a bespoke cabinet for the washbasin, which maximises storage without compromising on style.

This remodelling project not only extended the functionality of each space but also demonstrated that you don't have to buy a new house to get a modern space; with a good remodelling, you can get everything you need and idealise.
